THE AESTHETICS OF POETIC FORM
THE AESTHETICS OF POETIC
FORM
ABSTRACT
This study seeks to examine the concept of
poetic form in terms of its status and relevance as an aesthetic
object embodying distinct kinds of experience, knowledge and
belief. It is contended that (a) the aesthetic attitude is
characterized by its stance of desirelessness and contemplation
(b) aesthetic experience is radically different from the mystical
and the moral (c) aesthetic knowledge is the knowledge of
a new order of reality, and (d) aesthetic belief is the belief
in the plausibility of such an order of reality. The study
explores the views of Immanuel Kant, Arthur Schopenhauer,
John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate and Cleanth Brooks to substantiate
the hypothesis that poetic form achieves a distinct aesthetic
identity by reconstituting reality into a new order of relationships
and by evoking a sense of coherence and harmony unavailable
in the world of actuality.
