A Study Week
on
Indian Logic and Epistemology
Conveners: Prof. V. N. Jha and Prof. Ujjwala Jha.
The structural depth in Indian philosophical
systems was acquired in ancient India through dialogue
among various philosophical systems.
For a meaningful dialogue, however, what is most important
is the language of communication. Therefore, by 1000
A.D. it was felt necessary to develop a language of
precise communication. It started taking shape and
by the 13th A.D. a language called Navya Nyaya language
was fully developed and thereafter almost all intellectual
and philosophical discourses adopted that very language
of Navya Nyaya for precise communication and it continues
to be used in traditional philosophical discourses
even today.
But unfortunately, there is hardly any Institution
in India engaged in the study of Indian intellectual
and philosophical traditions offering any Course in
the language of Navya Nyaya in which the entire discourse
of 1000 years is preserved. As a result these texts
are not accessible to a genuine scholar having genuine
interest.
In order to acquaint the scholars in this discourse
Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla announces
a Study Week on "Indian Logic and Epistemology",
at IIAS, Shimla during 2-11 November 2009. Study Week
is aimed at giving exposure to that Navya Nyaya language
and methodology so that scholars can know how to equip
and transform themselves to have access to the original
texts written in Navya Nyaya language in Sanskrit.
This Study Week will have (A) 10 lectures for introducing
the fundamental concepts and theories and (B) the
reading of an original text in Sanskrit. The medium
of instruction will be English. The knowledge of Sanskrit
language, though advantageous, is not a pre-requisite
for joining the Programme.
Applications are invited from College and University
teachers of Philosophy, Sanskrit and Computer Science.
A batch of 25 participants will be selected from amongst
the applicants. Those interested may send their bio-data
(that should include their academic qualification,
experience, research interest and area of specialization)
All expenses will be borne by the IIAS. Applications
for the above programme should reach IIAS on before
20th September 2009. Those selected will be informed
by 30th September 2009.
Applications may be sent by email at autumnschool@gmail.com
