DEMOCRACY AND VIOLENCE: IN SOUTH
ASIA AND BEYOND
In this lecture, Ramachandra Guha
analyses the place of violence in movements protesting
the denial of democracy in multi-religious and multi-lingual
nation-states. In particular, he compares and contrasts
the insurgency in Kashmir with the struggles of the
Tamils in Sri Lanka. Guha argues that it is as important
to focus on the emotional and cultural aspects of
democracy as on its institutional aspects.
