A three-day International Conference on History and Memory was held at the Institute during 18 to 20 May 2010. Thirty scholars across the world participated in the conference. They include the names of Nusseibeh Sari from Palestine; Paula Varela Gomes from Coimbra; Phillip Bonner from South Africa; Ciraj Rasool from Africa; Hai Ke and Thi Huong Thao from Vietnam; Paula Menesses from Mozambique; Jean Comaroff, David Lelyved, Meena Alexander and Margaret Levi from USA; Nilima Gomes from Brazil; Helen Jarvis from Cambodia; Alexandra Curvelo and Angelo Cattaneo from Portugal; J.S. Grewal, Shiv Viswanathan, Neeladri Bhattacharya, Bhagwan Josh, Bhai Baldeep Singh, Gangeya Mukherjee, Madhavan Palat, Shashi Joshi and Patricia Mukhim all from India. The conference was supported by Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Indian Council of Historical Research.
Study Week on Exploring Gender, Redefining the Field: Feminist Journeys in the Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts, 1 to 5 June 2010.
Among the themes that explored during the study week are the significance of oral narratives in reconstructing women’s lives and experiences, their participation in political events and movements such as the Tebhaga movement of sharecroppers in the forties of the last century, Muslim women’s lives before and after the events of 1947 in Bengal, the reconstruction through oral and written texts of religious and philosophical experiences of forgotten or unacknowledged women as well as theoretical issues of oral history as a method for feminist scholars.
