History, Science
and the Limits of Language-An Integrationist Approach with
four papers- The Language of History and the Language of Science;
The origins of Mathematics; Communication by Numbers; and
Language Unlimited by Professor Roy Harris of the University
of Oxford presents a veritable epistemological cut in the
philosophy of Language in the Western tradition since the
Greeks. The Language of History and the Language of Science
are both beset by well known semantic problems and the author
proposes to examine them from the theoretical perspective
of integrational linguistic communication, whether in straightforward
English prose or in the symbolic notation of the Laboratory,
is based on shared public knowledge of the words and symbols
used.
